ABS edge banding does not add any fillers (such as calcium carbonate and other substances) during the production process, so the rounded corners are very smooth and bright after trimming, and the surface has strong impact resistance. ABS edge banding has good dimensional stability, will shrink only at a high temperature of 99 degrees, and it has strong resistance to chemical corrosion. It is also more environmentally friendly, has no irritating odor, can be directly burned at high temperature without air pollution, and is beneficial to environmental protection.

Features of ABS Edge Banding
  • Extend the life of furniture
  • Waterproof and UV resistant
  • High impact strength
  • High color consistency of trimming
  • High environmental protection level

Benefits Of ABS Edge Banding

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene edge banding, more commonly known as ABS, has a lot of great benefits. It’s highly resistant to abrasions and impacts while also being thermally and mechanically resilient. As a laminate, ABS also has the benefit of being ecologically sound. This makes it a favourite option over alternatives like PVC, which shares many of the characteristics of ABS but is (like most plastics) notorious for being environmentally unfriendly. ABS definitely comes out as the better option on ecological terms, as, unlike PVC, it lacks chlorine. This means it’s an acid-free option that is by far the more environmentally friendly option. Acids in plastic are regularly responsible for a wide variety of environmental damage, so ABS is a great choice. The lower density of ABS also means it has a lighter composition than other alternatives. Despite this ABS is still a high-quality choice that offers a great finish.

ABS Edge Banding VS PVC Edge Banding and PP Edge Banding

FeaturesABSPVCPP
EnvironmentABS is considered the “green” option because it is recyclable. Recycling is done by burning without releasing harmful gases. ABS also decomposes faster in the ground.PVC can be partially recycled, but burning it releases harmful gases. It also takes longer to decompose.PP is highly eco-friendly and 100% recyclable. It does not release toxic substances during processing and has a lower environmental footprint compared to ABS and PVC.
Fire ResistanceMore resistant to fire, and exposure to harmful materials is limited.Fire-resistant, but burning releases toxic gases.PP has moderate fire resistance and can be modified with flame-retardant additives to enhance safety.
DurabilityLess resistant to UV light and strong solvents, but pigments can improve resistance.More resistant to strong solvents and UV light.PP has excellent chemical resistance, moisture resistance, and toughness. It maintains stability under outdoor conditions but may need UV stabilization.
CostMore expensive in the plastic edge banding category.Cheaper than ABS and many other plastics.Cost-effective and competitively priced between ABS and PVC, offering a good balance of performance and affordability.
ProcessingConvenient to process on edgebanders, with longer trimming knife life. Solvent choice needs caution.Suitable for most edgebanders, but harder to process due to strong composition.Very easy to process on edgebanders thanks to its lightweight nature and flexibility, making it ideal for high-speed production.
